The Yorùbá keyboard layout is free to download and use. This keyboard layout requires Keyman 6.0. Tavultesoft Keyman 6.0 is a commercial product. See Tavultesoft's registration page for further details.
The Yorùbá keyboard layout can be downloaded from http://www.openroad.net.au/languages/files/yo41.zip. Once you have downloaded the zip file, extract the file into a temporary directory. Then start up Keyman 6 and install the keyboard layout from the Keyman configuration screen.
Keyman 6.0 Documentation is available in PDF format at http://www.tavultesoft.com/keyman/downloads/keyman60.pdf
Windows 95/98/ME are based on older non-unicode legacy encodings. Keyman 6 will work on Windows 95/98/ME with some unicode aware programs. Windows NT4/2000/XP have much better Unicode support. It is important to read Tavultesoft's FAQ “What applications and operating systems support Unicode?”.
The Yorùbá keyboard layout uses deadkey combinations to type the required diacritics. The deadkey is entered first, followed by the vowel the diacritic is placed above or below.
The Yorùbá keyboard layout uses the “Right Alt” and “Shift-Right Alt” key sequences to type the required extended Latin characters. By default the keyboard layout uses U+0329 COMBINING VERTICAL LINE BELOW. It also uses deadkey combinations before a base character to enter a diacritic. Typing the deadkey twice will allow you to type the ASCII equivalent character normally assigned to the particular key being typed, i.e. typing ~ will procduce a tilde diacritic, while typing ~~ will produce U+007E (tilde).
To place a diacritic above or below an extended Latin character, type the appropriate deadkey first, then type the required modifier key sequence.
Additional punctuation can be typed using a Right Alt key sequence, as indicated in the keyboard map below.
The keyboard layout has been designed to use with Microsoft's US English keyboard.
Changes in version 4.0
Version 4.0 uses “vertical-line-below” as default, with an optional input for “dot-below”. Output uses Unicode Normalization Form C (NFC). The optional “dot-below” is entered using the Right-Alt-/ keysequence followed by the required letter (E, e, O, o, S or s).
It is also possible to type using decomposed characters (combining diacritics) producing NFD output. To use NFD output, do not use the diacritic deadkeys or Right-Alt keys discussed above, rather use the Right-Alt key sequences using the digit keys from 1 to 7 as indicated on the keyboard map below.
Version 4.0 adds some diacritic support for academic use with respect to older,“obsolete” orthographies.
Changes in version 4.1
Added currency symbols for the Euro, Franc, Niara and Pound.
