Mapping files
One of the tasks of the Harari ICT language enablement project was to create mapping files to convert between different Harari orthographies, i.e. automatically convert a Harari document written in the Latin script into a Harari document written in the Ethiopic or Arabic scripts.
Two conversion files have been developed:
- Latin <> Ethiopic
Convert a Harari document written in the Latin script to a Harari document written in the Ethiopic (Geez) script or from the Ethiopic orthography to the Latin orthography. - Latin <> Arabic
Convert a Harari document written in the Latin script to a Harari document written in the Arabic script or from the Arabic orthography to the Latin orthography.
The mapping files use SIL Encoding Converters application. SIL Encoding Converters uses TECkit and provides addons for Microsoft Word to allow you to convert documents while using Microsoft Word. If you do not use Microsoft Word, you can download TECkit and use it to convert text files or convert text in the systems clipboard while you cut and paste text.
You can use any of the following software:
- SILConverters 3.0; a Microsoft Word/COM support for TECkit, CC, and ICU, Perl and Python. If you use Microsoft Word, download this file.
- TECkit: a Text Encoding Conversion toolkit.
- DocCharConvert: requires Java JRE 5.
This software is free.
