The online presentation is available.

Dr. Lizhong Zhang

This paper describes the author's ideas of and experience in developing a project entitled "Online Chinese-English Bilingual Databases". The project originated from the author's involvement in developing an online Chinese language course for English speakers (see the Online Chinese Course Web Site at: http://chinese.bendigo.latrobe.edu.au/).

As the students enrolled in the online Chinese course need learning resources available on the net, to build online English-Chinese bilingual databases seemed to be a good solution. In line with this development, the project was designed to develop a comprehensive range of Chinese-English bilingual resources to be delivered via the Internet. In order to cater for a wider range of users, the project was later modified to make all the online resources available not only to meet the learning needs of Chinese language students, and also to serve the various needs of researchers, educators, teachers, students, business professionals, and any others, who are interested in developments in the Chinese-speaking community.

The initial tasks to be undertaken by the project team are:

While demonstrating the major features of the project (see the Project Web Site at: http://mmlab.bendigo.latrobe.edu.au/lib/search.htm), this paper addresses some important issues in designing and managing online bilingual databases such as hardware and software selection, interactive functionality, site automation, data collection and protection, and user responses.
