The Better Health Channel is one of a number of Victorian government websites (calledchannels) that are designed to provide information to the Victoriancommunity on-line in consumer-centric ways (rather thanorganisational-centric ways). The BHC is hosted by the Department of HumanServices and was launched in May 1999.
The guiding principles of the BHC are quality assurance of information andaccessibility.
The accessibility objective is interpreted to mean that the information online must be accessible to the widest range of members of the community.This includes people whose principle language is not English. The BHCimplemented a text based solution to this objective as opposed to the morecommon graphic or PDF approach. This has presented some challenges both tothe site managers and the user. A recent consultancy looked at thesechallenges and made some recommendations for improving the accessibiltiy ofthe site for the NESB community.
Jeff's presentation will look at these challenges and how the Department islooking at ways of meeting them.
