Vicnet – Monash University Translation and Technology Project
Abstract
During 2006 and 2007 Vicnet, a division of the State Library of Victoria, undertook research into the way multilingual information is included on Victorian Government websites on behalf of the Victorian Multicultural Commission (VMC). A need for relevant training and skills to enable translators to prepare transations for websites was identified in the research report. It was recommended that courses be developed to provide necessary knowledge and skills for translators to provide translations appropriate for online use.
In response to the above recommendation, Vicnet formed a partnership with Monash University’s School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics (LCL) to jointly develop the necessary training curriculum. LCL currently offers post graduate studies in interpreting and translation. LCL has also undertaken research for VMC on pathways to interpreting and translating.
