Case studies - Reaching CALD Communities: Showcasing ICT & Multimedia Projects

Abstract

The purpose of this session is to showcase innovative uses of websites and multimedia in communicating with culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities.

Delegates will have the opportunity to listen to, see and ask questions about innovative projects/websites developed by organisations such as the City of Whittlesea, Arwarbukarl Cultural Resource Association (NSW) and Lɔ̈k ë Jëëŋ who use translated audio information online as communication channels with their CALD audiences or use ICT to support and revitalise Aboriginal and, new and emerging community languages.

The session will be chaired by Maria Dimopoulos, an experienced diversity trainer, facilitator and organisational change specialist who will draw out aspects of interest of each panel members’ story and will put forward ideas and future directions to improve communication within our multilingual and multicultural society with the use of ICT.

Maria Dimopoulos

Maria Dimopoulos, Managing Director of MyriaD Consultants, is a diversity trainer, facilitator, and organisational change specialist. She has worked extensively with immigrant communities on issues including aged care, health, domestic violence and the law and is a former chair of the Association of Non English Speaking Background Women of Australia. She has served on a number of boards and committees, including the Chief Justice’s Ethnic Communities Advisory Committee to the Family Court, and has undertaken work for organisations including the Islamic Council of Victoria, Australian Multicultural Foundation and Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission. Maria has received an Amnesty International Human Rights Award for her work on the legal needs of women from non-English speaking backgrounds.
