 The Hearing Help Card scheme

People who have hearing problems can benefit by carrying a Hearing Help Card - to use whenever they need "hearing help" - in theatres, restaurants, clubs, recreational facilities, when flying, in shops, in banks, in libraries and other places.

The Hearing Help Card is similar in size to a credit card and can be carried easily in the pocket, handbag or wallet.

How to recognise the Hearing Help Card:

Follow the simple strategies listed on the back of the card to facilitate communication.

Important information such as dates, times, telephone numbers, amounts of money, people's name, address and more should always be written to ensure that the hearing impaired person has correctly understood what you are saying.

The scheme uses the "ear" symbol, which has been adopted by organisations for the deaf around the world. It will be displayed wherever people with hearing difficulties can be assured of receiving the hearing help they need. Telstra, for example, has the symbol in public telephone boxes where it indicates that the handset is fitted with an induction coil or volume control for hearing aid wearers, or that a TTY is available. Also, make use of the DESKCARD which invites hearing impaired people to tell staff that they have hearing problems. The Desk Card is self-standing and can be used on reception desks and information counters. The four basic communication strategies are listed on the back as a reminder. These are available from BHA Vic.
