The Role of Specialist Services

 

ARTS VICTORIA makes an annual sum of money available to provide Auslan Interpreters at certain stage productions.

The Australian Caption Centre is responsible for captioning TV programs in Australia. They have an office in Melbourne. Television programs and captioned features can be purchased through them. Cinemedia has a collection of captioned videos that is available for loan to members. An arrangement is available with some local libraries for borrowers to pick up and return videos.

Australian Communication Exchange (ACE) is responsible for providing telephone access for deaf and hearing impaired people and people with voice impairments via the National Relay Service (NRS) which operates 24 hours a day.

Many organisations in the field of deafness and hearing impairment maintain libraries of material on deafness related topics.

La Trobe University specialises in teaching Auslan and runs courses on Deaf culture. There are many Deaf students on campus.

Northern Melbourne TAFE has established a Centre of Excellence in providing courses for Deaf and hearing impaired students.
